Free Easy Chunky Hat Crochet Pattern
This hat is made using a very simple design, all you need to know is how to work in the round, the single crochet stitch, the double crochet stitch and working in the back loop only.
This is how I like make a lot of my standard hats for my pop up shop, because its quick, easy, looks cute and is a little different from the standard hat, working in the back loop only makes lovely ridges and texture on this hat and really compliments the use of the chunky yarn.
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
blo = back loop only
slst = slip stitch
1 skein of Loops and Threads Charisma yarn, or any other weight 5 bulky yarn
I also sometimes make this pattern with Lionbrand Hometown USA, and other weight 6 super bulky yarn, using a 10mm hook, and starting with 42 chains and making 12 rows. + 4 rows for the brim
8 mm crochet hook
Round 1: leaving a tail about 10 inches long, ch 47 for an average adult, or as many needed to wrap around your head. slst into the first ch, ch 1, sc in each ch all the way around. slst into the first sc.
Round 2: ch 2, (counts as first dc) dc in blo all the way around. slst into top of the ch 2
Round 3: ch 1, sc in blo all the way around, slst into the first sc.
repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 16 rows (for a standard adult) or as many needed, use your yarn needle or crochet hook to weave the tail from the foundation chain in and out of each ch stitch all the way around, pull tight and tie off to form the top of the hat.
Round 17: now would be the time to change colors if you want a different colored brim.
ch 1 TURN, sc in blo all the way around, slst into the first sc.
Round 18: ch 2, dc in blo all the way around, slst into the top of the chain 2
Repeat rows 17 and 18 1 time.
now the pattern on the fold should match the rest of the hat, and you can attach a pom pom if you like!
tie off and weave in your ends and your done!
